Definitely one of the prettiest spots near the Treasure Valley. Don't get scared off by the 1.5 hour drive (from Ontario)! Surrounded by the Owyhee Canyon lands and the majestic dam, this is the perfect spot to enjoy the water from a paddle board. Whether you are just getting started, going long distance and exploring the caves and rock structures around, or even having a go at SUP fishing there is no better spot than Owyhee. Safety notes: Watch the wind speed when you paddle out. Because this is a large lake, wind can cause you to drift quite a distance. Don't go out if wind speed is over 10 MPH. Wind and storms can blow into the canyon without warning so always have a plan and go with a buddy and tell others where you are going. If the wind is blowing moderately it's a good idea to paddle against the wind when you first go out, then when you get tired the wind will be at your back when you paddle back to shore. Great beach to set up on the South end of the reservoir and great body of water to go for a relaxing stroll, learning if your a beginner or a good workout if you want to go around the whole lake. Great spot to take the whole family for a weekend trip! Hazards: Wind and boats A scenic 1.5 to 2.5 (depending on current) hour float down the Payette river starting at Rudy Park/Twin Bridges that flows into the Snake and ends at Centennial Park Boat Ramp. It has moderately fast currents and small slow flowing sections with pockets/eddy's to explore and see wildlife. Safety Notes: Check water levels early in the year (spring/early summer). High, swift water can be dangerous. Also low water levels towards the end of summer can cause board fins to drag bottom. Be aware of the water level, obstacles above and below the water and always float with a buddy. If you're looking to get out of the desert and into some pine, this a great place to go (only 1 hour 20 min from Ontario). Clean mountain water lake with multiple entry spots and camp ground. Great for beginners and the whole family. Parts of the reservoir charge for parking. Hazards: Wind and boats About a 50 minute drive from Ontario, Black Canyon is a great paddle spot for a day or weekend trip. Filled by the Payette river the reservoir is scenic and welcoming for all paddlers. A nice beach and swim area and grassy park can be found at the Black Canyon Park which is the best place to launch your board or kayak. Hazards: Wind and boats Just 40 minutes from Ontario, Bully creek is great earlier in the season when the water is higher. Plenty of shallow marsh and inlets to explore and it's small size makes it ideal for beginners. Hazards: Wind and boats Lake Lowell has multiple entry points and is a fairly large lake about 45 minute drive from Ontario. Beautiful water and fun rocky shores to hang out for the day this is one of our favorite day trip spots. Watch the wind speed when you paddle out. Since this is a large lake wind can cause you to drift quite a distance. Don't go out if wind speed is over 10 MPH. Hazards: Wind and boats A wide section of the Snake River with cool islands and eddies to discover and sand dunes bordering the north side of the river. The slower section next to the boat dock is a suitable start for beginners. As you venture further out it's best to be with an experienced paddler or take a lesson.
